- Wrap your water heater in an insulation blanket, you can save 1000 pounds of carbon dioxide per year.
- Set the water heater no higher than 120 degrees. You'll save another 550 lbs. of carbon monoxide per year.
- Use less air conditioning in the summer. Open the windows and use a fan, try to use the AC only on extremely hot days, and set the the thermostat a few degrees higher than usual.
- Plant a tree by windows where the sun heats up the house.
- When you buy new appliances, choose Energy Star labeled models. They consume much less energy and water than standard appliances.
- Improve your home's insulation, contact your local electric company for possible rebates.
- Get in the habit of turning off lights whenever you leave a room.
- Control bathroom fans with a timer.
- Install motion sensing switches that will turn lights on and off.
